MLK, Civil Rights, and Communism

Martin Luther King Jr. should be a revered name forever. He helped to bring change because he truly believed in something. He did it peacefully. We must honor this man. If it weren't for his dream (and many, many others who fought for us) we would not be the America we are today. My best friend wouldn't have been able to marry that stud muffin of hers and have beautiful children. I wouldn't have been able to receive an education. My parents would have been ostracized by society. In fact, some of my siblings would have been given the choice to move away and join white society elsewhere because their skin is so fair. I would not have had that same opportunity because I look foreign. I don't think people my age realize the impact that the Civil Rights still have in modern society. Let's remember this guy, who left early to meet our Father.

I wonder how he would have felt had he been around to see President Obama win the 2008 election? I think he would have been proud of his country. I know that I was shocked and then felt proud that we have moved forward. Race isn't playing a key role like it did before. I know that I can look at my son and tell him he can be whomever he wants to be and neither his home nor his race will hold him back. For some of you, race isn't an issue, it's not important, you don't understand why everyone made a big deal out of that election. For me, it made all the difference in the world! I had boys not date me because of my race, I've been judged because I'm not as fair as my other siblings, I had teachers sent me home and tell me to learn how to write my name in AMERICAN (yeah, teachers!). Race is something I wish I hadn't struggled with BUT growing up in the South made that extremely difficult.

Today I am proud of my Mexican, Irish, Filipino, Chinese, and African roots! Thanks MLK for helping me and the rest of this country move towards progress. THANK YOU! FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST, THANK GOD ALMIGHTY!

Thank you for this! It is so crazy that a person fighting with his mind and his words is STILL TO THIS DAY always regarded as someone who is unique and/or trying an unorthodox method to resolve injustice. Until we understand that this should ALWAYS be the first and most important method of conflict resolution, we will never evolve into the higher orders of thinking required to dig us out of the hole we've created. The status quo should only remain the unquestioned if no objections can be found. The revolution will not be televised :)
